Renk, based in Augsburg, plans to expand its product portfolio with a small unmanned tank. However, the autonomous combat vehicle is being developed and built in cooperation with a partner, according to the report. The partner in question is the Finnish Patria Group. The project was announced at the Eurosatory trade show in Paris, along with news from Rheinmetall and KNDS. The autonomous mini-tank is referred to as an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV). Patria is contributing the expertise from its Trackx tracked vehicle, and Renk will use the HSWL 076 transmission, which was designed for vehicles weighing between 10 and 20 tons. A drive-by-wire option is also planned, allowing the Renk tank to operate electrically rather than mechanically for shifting, braking, and steering. This would enable the system to be used with a crew at a later stage. The idea for the Renk tank was also inspired by the changing global security situation and the wars currently raging.
